IT'S A GIRL!!! Erika's Birth Story

On Monday, February 16, I had my usual hydrotherapy class. I didn't want to go, as I had barely slept the night before (insomnia, and up with Kira a few times). But last week's hydro class had been cancelled due to a chemical imbalance, so I was really feeling the need for some weightlessness in my hips! So I got my act together, and went off to the class. In the middle of class (at 10.45), I had my first contraction! It was more painful than my "normal" Braxton Hicks contractions that I'd been getting all throughout the pregnancy - more like the "painful" ones I'd been getting off and on since Friday. I actually thought that Friday (the 13th!) was going to be the day - I'd woken up with frequent, painful tightenings, but when I got up they slowly died off, coming only intermittently over the weekend. So when I had one in the pool on Monday, I just thought it was more of the same. I mentioned it to the physio, who suggested I get out of the pool! I thought I'd be fine, if I just took it easy. But I had another...I wanted to just go sit in the shallow end and enjoy the weightlessness, rather than push on with the exercises. But the physio said "How 'bout you just get out?!" She was worried I'd rupture my membranes in the pool, ruining the day for everyone! So, I got out, and reluctantly got dressed.

I thought I might go off and get a coffee and sit quietly for a few minutes before picking Kira up from the playroom, but by the time I was ready I thought I'd better just get her and go home. I'd had a few more tightenings in the change-room, and again on the way to get Kira - I even had a lady stop and ask me if I needed help, as I had stopped walking and was clutching at the wall! I was ok, though! I got Kira, and slowly made my way to the car. I decided that I needed to stop at the shops to get milk, despite having even more painful tightenings whilst driving!
We finally got home, and had lunch. I found it difficult to do anything whilst having a pain...Kira knew that I wasn't "right", and kept wanting to give me cuddles. I found I was needing to give her lots of reassurance! "Mummy's ok. Mummy has a tummy ache"! I'd sent Neal (who was at work) a text message to tell him what was going on, but that I thought it was more of the false labour - I'd let him know if/when that changes. By the time we were done with lunch, I was texting him to come home. I still wasn't convinced it was labour - the tightenings didn't seem to be regular - but I was too uncomfortable to manage them and Kira on my own.
By the time Neal got home (about 1pm) I knew it was the real deal! I phoned Virginia (our sister-in-law, who was to babysit Kira for us), and she said she was on her way - but would be about an hour! I prayed I could wait that long! I was hurting, but felt I could manage it if only Kira was taken care of. Poor Neal was being torn between the two of us, as we both needed someone to focus on us alone. When I realised that I needed someone here NOW for Kira, we started ringing other people - Neal's parents, our friends...but no-one answered their phone, or were available at such short notice. Finally, I said to Neal "We have to go now - Kira has to come with us!". She wasn't meant to come - wasn't meant to see me in such distress. But I needed my midwife! She could focus on me, and Neal could then focus on Kira until someone could take over from him.

We were at the hospital by 1.40pm. Kira was VERY distressed at all the noise her poor Mummy was making! We got rushed up to the Birth Centre (where my midwife was already on duty - YAY!!), but it wasn't long before I was telling Neal to take Kira out of the room - she was upsetting me as much as I was upsetting her. Apparently, Kira was cared for by no less than 4 midwives and Dr's, all trying to appease her with snacks and nursery rhymes! Neal would stay with me during the contractions, but then would duck out to check on his daughter until he heard me starting to holler again...poor man!
I had an internal check at 2pm - fully dilated!! Soon after that, my water's broke, and at 2.13pm Erika Skye Barber was born! I birthed her whilst kneeling on the bed, holding onto Neal for dear life! I didn't have any drugs - not that there was time, really. My midwife, Helen, had filled the bath for me, but I couldn't quite get there. Kira was outside the room when her sister was born - Neal brought her in straight after the birth, so she got to see Erika whilst she was still attached to me! Virginia had apparently arrived just moments before the birth, too, and our back-up (friend Scott with his mother-in-law) arrived just moments after. Kira went out to be with them whilst I got cleaned up; Neal took Erika out to meet everyone and have cuddles.

Virginia took Kira home for some dinner whilst Neal, Erika and myself rested, and prepared to head home. Erika and I both got a clean bill of health, and were discharged at 6.30pm.

Our first night at home started off fine - Erika ate and slept. But at 2am, Erika decided it was time to party!! Now, at just 4 days old, she has her days and nights a bit mixed, and loves to "snack feed" (giving her tummy pains!), but we're getting there. Kira loves her little sister! She loves to watch her "drinking boobies", and gives her lots of kisses!
Neal and I feel very blessed to have two beautiful girls! And don't they look alike?! But is it asking too much to wish for some sleep, too?!
Erika's stats: wt=3.425kg (300g more than Kira) or 7lb 9oz (Kira was 6lb 14oz); length=50cm (same as Kira); head circumference=34cm (same as Kira)

Belly Dancing!!

At long last, after much effort, we FINALLY have this video on here!!! Well, parts of it, anyway. The original video is 5mins long, but we couldn't upload it, so here are the best 2 snippits...

These are short clips of Belly-Bean on the move, at almost 36wks gestation. As you can see, I'm laying on my left side. What you can't see is how Belly Bean is positioned...it's laying on it's back, head to the left of screen, bottom to the right, and it's arms and legs are towards the top (my right side). That's where you'll see most of the movements!

Hope this video works.....

Kira's "Big Girl" Room!

IT'S HERE! IT'S HERE!!! Kira's "big girl" bedroom furniture has finally arrived! And just in time, too - I'm now 37 weeks, 3 days pregnant!

The furniture arrived at about 10am, and Neal and I busied ourselves putting it all together, transforming the room
formally known as "the study" into Kira's new bedroom. Belly-
Bean will be having her old room, eventually, as it's already set up as a nursery, and it saves us from having to move all that furniture around as well. Plus, we thought it would make more sense to have Belly-Bean's room closest to ours for night-time feeds, etc. Kira's new room is next door to the lounge, which may interfere with her daytime naps, but she's already starting to outgrow those. So again, it makes sense to put Belly-Bean up the quieter end of the house.

As you can see, we've kept a lot of Kira's treasures for her new room, including the wardrobe mural I painted before she was born (I've yet to do one for Belly-Bean!). So hopefully her new room doesn't feel too strange to her.

Kira LOVES her new room! She was sooo excited to see the furniture arriving, and helped Mummy and Daddy bolt the bed together! She did not leave the room once, even after it was completed...we had a hard time convincing her it was time to come out for lunch! The bed is a bit too tall for her to climb up (or down), so she has a stool at the end of the bed to assist her. It only took her a couple of practices before she could do it all on her own! She loves the flowers and butterflies on her doona cover (which she helped choose), and is ecstatic to have her own pillows and cushions!

She wasn't too sure about being left alone to sleep in her new room, however. Daddy laid with her for a little while, to see if she'd settle for a nap. She did calm down, but I think she was too excited to sleep! But that's not such a bad thing, as she went down without any drama's tonight - too tired!

Kira woke up a couple of times through the night. She was still in her bed, but alas poor Teddy-Bear had jumped out, and she wasn't able to get him! Kira can't see the stool in the dark, so it was Mummy and Daddy to the rescue! On one occasion, when Daddy went in, he found Kira on the floor. She'd obviously tried to get Teddy, but couldn't find her way back into bed. We don't think she fell out, but we have her cot mattress on the floor for "just-in-case". We were up and down to her a few times over about 3hrs, but eventually she settled back down to sleep. Sunday night was a much better night. She woke once, had a drink and a nappy change, and went straight back to sleep, just like any other night. Yay!!

Kira looks so little in her big bed - she barely takes up half of it. But our little girl isn't so little anymore....we can't get over just how grown up she is! This is our angel first thing Sunday morning - still very excited about her big girl bed!!

Kira's "Kidisms"

I thought I'd share with you some of Kira's latest sayings and behaviours. They certainly keep us amused!

Kira is very good at saying "Bye-bye! See ya later!" and even "Love you!" when we're saying farewell to people. Sometimes she'll even blow them a kiss! She usually reserves this for people she knows and is comfortable with, otherwise she can get a bit shy. But she surprised me when we were saying goodbye to my girlfriends after they'd popped by with Kira's birthday presents, because as well as the usual "Bye-bye!", she added "Thank you for the presents!"!! It sounded more like "Ah-kyoo fahnah peasants!", but you could tell what she meant. I guess she must've heard me saying it to them, but I never expected to hear Kira call it out to them across the lawn!

Neal was entertaining Kira with the alphabet this morning. He'd write down each letter in turn, saying what it was as he did so, and then Kira would say it back to him. "A", "A", "B", "B", and so on. No worries...until he got to "Q", "Q", "R", "Pirate"!! Ha-ha - "Arrrr, me hearties"!!!

Kira has discovered her shadow. She's completely fascinated by it! She's noticed it before, but over the last couple of days she's really become taken in by it - she even talks to it! "Where's Shadow?", then when she finds it, "Oh, hi Shadow! Come on Shadow!". It takes ages to get her to do anything when she's focused on her shadow, as she hasn't quite worked out that it will follow her wherever she goes. This morning, for example, we needed to get into the car. But instead, Kira chased her shadow across the front lawn away from the car, laughing and calling out to "Shadow". Eventually, she started heading towards the car, but she'd stop after every couple of paces to make sure her shadow was still there following her - "Come on Shadow!". She's starting to realise that everything has a shadow, though she's most intrigued by ones that move, and especially her own as she can manipulate it. She thought is was hysterically funny when I made her favourite teddy-bear's shadow kiss hers!

Kira Turns Two!

Kira's second birthday came in the middle of a record-breaking heat-wave - temperatures soaring above 40'C for a week! Plus, with me being 36+ weeks pregnant with "Belly-Bean", it was too hard to organise a party, so we just had a "quiet" gathering with family over for afternoon tea. I only wish "my" side of the family could've been there, too! Maybe next year...

Anyway, as you can see, the pictures are rather dark. That's because our State is being urged to use water and electricity cautiously, to ensure everyone has enough power to operate their airconditioners - vital in this heat. So, we've got our roller shutters and blinds closed to block out as much heat as possible, and only using the lights as necessary.

As we weren't having a party, as such, we've had visitors popping in all week with gifts for Kira (a great way to break the monotony of being cooped up in the house due to the heat!). So when Sunday, February 1 came, Kira KNEW it was her birthday! "Happy birthday? Presents? Two sleeps?" "No more sleeps - today's your birthday!" "Ooohhh, happy birthday Kira!" We had told her that Grandma and Grandad, and Aunty "Ginny" (Virginia), Uncle Craig and cousins James and Adam would be coming later, so for the rest of the day, she kept asking for them, and "Presents? More presents?" Kira understands "soon" and "later", so when our "later" answers became "soon", she got very excited!

Kira loved opening her gifts, and playing with them. She particularly loves the mini trampoline we gave her (she loves jumping on our leather lounge, but she's too big for that! But the floor isn't as much fun - now she's got somewhere fun to jump! You can see her sitting on it, with her cousins nearby), and the tea set from her Granny and Gramps. Kira also loved playing with her cousins. She adores them - they keep her in fits of giggles, and out of mischief!
These are just some of the pictures we took on Kira's birthday. She looked so adorable in the yellow dress Aunty Jeni and Uncle George gave her for Christmas, and her hair up in the yellow clip from Gran and Gramps. You could just tell she felt "special"!!
We had two cakes, as our wedding anniversary is on the same day as Kira's birthday. I made Neal and I a Chocolate Cherry-Ripe Mudcake to celebrate our 6th anniversary (we had that as our wedding cake!), and a "bouquet of flowers" vanilla cupcakes for Kira's birthday cake. This doubled as "party favours" - one way to use up all that cake!!
Kira LOVES cake (just like her Mummy and Daddy!), so she was really excited when we all gathered around the table. She was surprised, and thrilled, when we all started singing "Happy birthday" to her - lots of clapping and shrieking!! Then, with some help from Daddy and Grandad, Kira blew out her candle, and got stuck into some cake...mmm, yummy!!!
Happy birthday, Angel!!! Mummy and Daddy love you so very much!
